Friday Favorites with Heather: Summer Sun Protection
It’s that time of year, y’all. We find ourselves outside with the sun beating down. I’m fully obsessed with protecting my skin and since Wednesday was #NationalSunscreenDay, I decided that this was the perfect week to bring you a full round up of all cutest, best and most fun things we can use to protect ourselves. Now listen, you MUST wear sunscreen year round. I fully believe that it’s not exclusively for the summer. But, since it’s top of mind right now, I’m sharing my most favorite sunscreen, along with a few essentials to get you through this season.
I don’t know about y’all, but I could use a little fun and whimsy this summer and that includes this adorable tassel umbrella for the beach, pool or backyard. Plop yourself underneath it with a good book and some Kenny Chesney on the radio and you’ll be in full summer mode.
The fedora is my absolute favorite shape of hat. It’s the most universally flattering on everyone. This is my MUST HAVE hat for summer. It will easily transition from pool to picnic. You can throw it on with a swimsuit or sundress. I especially love the bright white with rattan trim band. And, the best part is it’s from Target for less than $20!
I love this beach hat from Amazon so much that last year I bought it in multiple colors and wore them all summer long. It easily packs without losing its shape. You might even consider the darling version with the American flag band. With Prime you can have it in two days and prepare your perfect Fourth of July attire.
You know how every single time you put sunscreen on your face, regardless if it’s a stick or lotion, it eventually runs from sweat and moisture and burns your eyes and then they’re watering and you’re irritated? Well, no longer friend. This is THE PERFECT way to get SPF on your face, without any discomfort. It’s also a great way to refresh (hence the name) your face throughout those hot summer days.
If you only buy one thing from these #FridayFavorites, then this is it! I’ve been wearing this for years and when my dermatologist applauded my use, I knew I was doing something right. I apply a nickel size all over my face and neck before my makeup. And, it keeps my face fully protected with SPF coverage even when I’m not outside in the blazing sun. You should be using this year round. I highly recommend.
Since my boys were born, they’ve been squirming and complaining when it came time to apply sunscreen. Whether we were at the baseball field or the beach, they hated my insistence on coating down before they could play. You know exactly what I mean. They whine and moan because they don’t like how it feels or the way it smells. “Ugh, Mom, really? Do I have to?” When we fully moved over to all Supergoop sunscreen products it was a game changer. I’m here to tell you that both of my boys line up to get their sunscreen, proclaiming how it’s the absolute best they’ve ever used. Not one complaint. Now that’s totally a reason to try it out.
I prefer to use a creamy primer on my eyes before I apply eyeshadow. What I love about this shimmershade is that it not only has protection in it, it also can stand alone as an eyeshadow (like today, for example, when I wanted to have a fresh look, but didn’t want a full face of makeup).
The sweet, sassy and oh so trendy @MalloryErvin shared these beauties recently as a part of an Amazon sunglass haul. These are almost identical to the Celine butterfly sunglasses that retail for $400. Yet, you can get these on Amazon for $15.99. Mallory never steers us wrong, friends. Mine arrived this week and I’ve worn them every day since. They are a fun departure from my customary aviators.
Last summer I lived in this white button down as my swimsuit cover up. I purchased the men’s version so that it would be totally oversized and roomy. The light fabric is breathable and has UPF protection. Love it!
I’ve been using St. Tropez for years and years. It’s all mental, I know, but I swear I’m a better Heather when I’m tan. So, since I’m coated in sunscreen and desperate to avoid a terrible sunburn, this is how I ensure a deep, bronzed tan, regardless of the time of year. This bronzing mousse is my favorite product because the consistency doesn’t streak and it’s so easy to work with when you are applying. Here’s my hack: wear rubber gloves with the little bumps on the fingers when you apply for a perfect application that doesn’t make your hands discolored.
If you’re looking for a less expensive self tanner, may I suggest this newish lotion from Jergens. For less than $10 and three days, you’ll look like you spent a week in the Caribbean.
I don’t have fair hair, but for my friends that do, treat your locks to this scalp and hair mist that protects your precious noggin from blistering. I mean, who wants a burned scalp and dry, damaged tresses?
